On 21 August 2020, ACT Government has announced changes in the State Nomination list for the year 2020-2021.

The next round of invitations will be held on or before 1 September 2020 and it is only open for individuals residing in Canberra. Overseas applications for Canberra Matrix are closed.

The state Government has already updated the critical skill list for the August 2020 and the nomination applications for onshore applicants are open.

On the critical skill list, there are number of occupations listed but the focus of Australian Government for this year is to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic and Economic crisis.

These are some major occupations in demand for the year:

  • Registered Nurses
  • ICT Business Analyst
  • Systems Analyst
  • Analyst Programmer
  • Software Engineer
  • Software Tester
  • Accountants

There are 2 PR pathways to consider in Canberra. You can either choose Skilled Work Regional (provisional) subclass 491 visa or Skilled Nominated (permanent) subclass 190 visa.

To be eligible to apply for provisional 491 visa,

  • your occupation must be on the ACT Critical skill list or you are 457/482 visa holder sponsored by ACT employer;
  • Canberra government requires at least 3 months of immediate work experience prior the matrix submission.
  • And Your work experience must comply with min 20 hrs. per week requirement.
  • For the applicants that are elf-employed, they are also eligible if the business has been operating in ACT for at least 12 months before the Matrix submission. The business income must be at least $500 per week
  • For the applicants with the spouse or child, the dependents must be living in Canberra for 3 months and they cannot be residing in any other state or territory of Australia.

Once the provisional visa is granted, the Canberra government requires you to stay and live in Canberra for at least 2 years from the date of grant.

Another visa option which gives direct PR in Canberra is 190 visas,

To be eligible for this visa, you must be residing in the Canberra for at least 6 months immediately before the submission of Matrix.

Furthermore, the applicant must have at least 6 months of full-time work experience in Canberra with min 35 hrs. per week.

For the individuals that are not employed bur are running their own business, they are also qualified provided that they have 12 months of ACT business activity and their business income is at least 1000 per week.

Individuals are asked to fill the Canberra Matrix scoring – Canberra residents and are carefully assessed by the assessing body and invitations are sent via web link to comply with all the requirements within 14 days from the receipt of the invitation.

The standard application processing period is 45 days and upon approval, skill select EOI is confirmed and Home Affairs will then issue the visa invitation.

The applicant is given 60 days to lodge the visa application else the offer to ACT nomination will expire and no extension is given.
