Temporary Skill Shortage visa
(TSS-subclass 482)
If you are looking to work on a sponsored job in Australia, with a visitor’s visa, then it is essential to acquire a temporary skill shortage visa, abbreviated as TSS visa. TSS 482 visa enables employers to address labor shortages by hiring skilled workers where they cannot find an appropriately skilled Australian. It facilitates employment of foreign workers to address temporary skill shortages, while ensuring that Australian workers get priority.
A business can sponsor someone for this visa if they cannot find an Australian citizen or permanent resident to do the skilled work. The business must be a Standard Business Sponsor (SBS) or an Overseas Business Sponsor (OBS) to sponsor you under the 482 TSS visa.
Eligibility Criteria of TSS Subclass 482 Visa Australia
- be nominated to work in an occupation on the list of eligible short-term skilled occupations
- have at least 2 years of relevant work experience in your nominated occupation or a related field
- have a relevant skills assessment if this is required for your occupation
- work only for your sponsor or associated entity, unless you are exempt
- Meet minimum standards of English language proficiency unless you are exempt from needing to show this
Streams Available
There are three streams available under the TSS 482 visa
482 Short-term stream
This is for employers to source genuine temporary overseas skilled workers in occupations included on the Occupation List for a maximum of two years each time,with eligibility to apply for permanent residence.
482 Medium-term stream
This is for employers to source highly skilled overseas workers to fill medium-term critical skills in occupations included on the Occupations List for up to four years (each time), with eligibility to apply for permanent residence after three years.
482 Labour Agreement stream
This visa is for skilled workers nominated by employers who have a Labour Agreement. It lets you live and work in Australia temporarily. Labour agreements are developed between the Australian Government (represented by the Department) and employers.
Basic Eligibility
Be nominated to work in an occupation on the list of eligible occupations list.
Have at least 2 years relevant work experience in your nominated occupation or a related field.
Have a relevant skills assessment if this is required for your occupation.
Work only for your sponsor or associated entity.
Meet minimum standards of English language proficiency unless you are exempted.
Visa Process
A sponsorship application by the employer (the employer needs to be a lawfull, active, operating business and meet local labour and employment practices).
The second part of the application process is the nomination application. This is regarding the position to be filled, annual market salary details, labour market testing, and the ‘genuineness’ of the position and pay SAF levy. The business must also be viable to sponsor from overseas.
The visa application by the nominated employee. The visa applicant must demonstrate that they meet the skills required for their occupation as well as health and character requirements.
How long you can stay
This is a temporary visa. You can stay in Australia for the period of time your employer nominates you for. This will be:
- Up to 4 years in most cases
- Up to 5 years if you are a Hong Kong passport holder

Application Streams of the Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (Subclass 482)

Subsequent Entrant
The Subsequent Entrant visa is for family members of subclass 457 and TSS visa holders who are applying separately for their own TSS visa and wish to join the primary subclass 457 or TSS visa holder in Australia.
